Classic Sunday Spaghetti with Homemade Marinara

Ingredients:

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped

For the Pasta:

  • 12 oz spaghetti
  • Water for boiling
  • 1 tsp salt

For Serving:

  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves

Instructions:

  1. Make the Sauce:
    • Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
    • Add chopped onions and sauté until soft.
    • Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
    • Pour in crushed and diced tomatoes.
    • Add tomato paste, Italian seasoning, sugar, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
    • Simmer uncovered for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • Stir in fresh basil and remove from heat.
  2. Cook the Pasta:
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
    • Cook spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente.
    • Drain and toss with a little olive oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Assemble & Serve:
    • Toss spaghetti with the marinara sauce or serve with sauce on top.
    • Garnish with Parmesan cheese and fresh basil.
